....यानी के सारी दुनिया जिससे बरामुन्दी कहलाती है. हम इसे BHETKI कहलाते हैं. बंगालियों के लिए यह एक ख़ास मछली है. बंगाल के तालाबों में यह मछली मिलती है. इस में बहुत कम कांटे होते हैं, और इसकी मॉस बहुत ही स्वादिष्ट होती है.
कई साल पहले मैं ने DISCOVERY CHANNEL पर एक शो देखि थी. दो AUSSIES खाना बना रहे थे. मछली देख कर में आश्चर्यचकित हो गयी. यह तो अपनी भेटकी है!! पर यह लोग इसे BARRAMUNDI कह रहे थे. पता चला, बरामुन्दी का मतलब है large scaled river fish - पर अगर मेरी नजरिया से देखो - तो बरा मुंडी यानी 'बड़ा सर वाला' जो की इस मछली का बिलकुल अची description है. अजीब है, न?
खैर, जब से मैं अमेरिका आई, यहाँ पर कुछ कुछ मछलियां पाई. - जैसे रोहू, इलिश, पाब्दा, पर भेटकी न मिली. यह मछली मुझे बहुत ही पसंद है. इसे खाने को मैं तरस जाती हूँ.
कल शाम को में खाना बनाने चली - पता चला घर में हल्दी नहीं है!! अरे! किसी बंगाली के घर में हल्दी न हो तो खाना कैसे बनेगी? आज ऑफिस से वापस आते वक़्त मैं एक Loblaws में रुकी. Canada का यह एक बहुत बड़ा बाजार है, पर मैं पहली बार आज गयी.
मछलियों का counter पहुँच के मैं देखि - BARRAMUNDI !! YAY !! और इनके पास अलग अलग packet में भी यह मछली मिल रही थी. मैं तीन fillets लेते आई. घर आते वक़्त सिर्फ यही ख्याल आ रहा था की मैं इस मछली की क्या बनाऊँ ? झोल? चढ़छड़ी? झाल? fry ? अरे..अभी तो यह fridge में है, और मुझे बहुत भूक लगी है. कोई मुझे भेटकी की तरकारी बना के दे!!

... or what the world calls Barramundi. We call it Bhetki. For Bengalis this is a delicacy and very popular as well. It's found in the numerous fresh water ponds and lakes dotting the Ganges Delta. It's got few bones, and a beautiful, white flaky meat that is just amazingly good.
A few years ago, I watched a show on the Discovery Channel. Two Aussies were making fish - Barramundi!! I was astonished. I did not know that the Bhetki even had a western counterpart! Its name means 'large scaled river fish'. cause it has got very large scales (7th grade Biology, anyone? anyone??) Funnily enough, translating Barramundi into my native Hindi means Big Head - which is a very apt description of the rather large headed fish.
Since I moved to North America, I have found some of the fishes so favoured by us Bengalis - Rohu, Hilsa, Tilapia, Pabda - but for the most part these are frozen the moment they are caught not fresh. But I would have given anything to get some frozen Bhetki!
In any case, yesterday evening I decided to cook some food for dinner - girl's gotta eat, y'all. Imagine my horror when I checked my spice cupboard for turmeric and I was all OUT!! YIKES!! What was I going to season with? Salt and turmeric is like the the salt and pepper of Indian food. Regardless, I had to go to the grocery store for some - you guessed it - salt and turmeric.
Loblaws is a large grocery chain in Canada - with numerous brands and outlets. I had been to the Fortino's but never to a Loblaw's. On the way back from work, I stopped at one.
Just out of curiosity I decided to check out the seafood section. Imagine my incredible delight at spotting Barramundi fillets! YAY!! The kind lady at the counter also showed me the individually packaged ones and I picked up three. On the drive home all I could think about was - what am I gonna make of the bhetki - braise with veggies? Saute? Fry? Gravy? mmm...Sigh!! I am starting to feel hungry. Someone make me some Bhetki curry - quick!!
